I was just watching this youtube episode, where they mention how the processing level affects nutrient availability, especially calorie absorption.

For example, whole almonds may leave ~10-30% of calories "trapped" within the food matrix (later being fermented by our microbiota or lost in feces), while finely grinding almonds may enable almost all of its original calories to be absorbed.

I'm wondering if Cronometer provides a way to account for this. Claude says:

The Atwater system assumes a roughly constant digestibility across foods, but it doesn't account for food matrix effects. Whole nuts are the clearest counter-example — bomb calorimetry says the energy is there, and the macronutrient composition predicts ~170 kcal/oz for almonds, but human fecal-balance studies show ~20% of that energy is never actually absorbed because intracellular lipid stays trapped behind intact cell walls and ends up in the colon. So the Atwater factors systematically overestimate metabolisable energy for whole nuts, and increasingly so as the food becomes less processed.

It mentions the Beltsville studies as the "gold-standard human fecal-balance measurements", but still limited:

The USDA Beltsville group has been extending this work, but coverage is still patchy outside nuts.

This is obviously hard to account for, but I wonder if we could have, e.g., a discount factor to be applied to whole foods vs ground foods. Probably the place to start would be nuts, as previously mentioned.

Hi guys, I noticed that when using macro ratios the protein recommendation is often very very high. And I took the time to look through forums and I see a lot of people have issue with this and basically end up just using fixed values and calculating their own macros.

I personally think you guys are using the RDA in pounds and not in kilograms which is a huge mistake. The RDA is 0.8g per KG of weight, not pound. So if I'm 65kg, my RDA default should be 52g or protein per day and not 114g. I also noticed a LOT of macro calculators online do the same mistake and give people huge protein intake recommendations, like 100's of grams per day even for people that what to maintain weight. Just wanted to point that out, the standard/recommended protein intake is 0.8g per KG, not pound.

Would be great to have an automatic default that makes it easier to have average macros and not have to calculate them on our own and filled them in as fixed values.

Any help here would be very much appreciated.

I have been following Weight watchers for many years with limited success. WW has me eating about 1500 calories a day. I have been weight training for about 8 years and my trainer is telling me that I'm not eating enough calories. He wants me to try Cronometer and suggests that I eat more like 1800 calories a day - 150g protein, 100 grams carbs and 88 grams fat. I currently weigh 193 pounds and would like to get to 180. I am 5'6" tall. My trainer is a male, around 40 years old so I'm not sure he's plugged in to the plight of a woman my age? I would love to hear opinions on this!

I’m having a really hard time figuring out the calorie tracking part of this app. Is it not the energy budget? Mostly what I want from it is nutrient tracking, and it’s great for that, but I’d also like to keep an eye on how much I’m eating. But I can’t seem to be able to find how many calories it thinks I should have a day. I’ll log breakfast, at about 300 calories at 6:00 in the morning and it tells me I have 200 or less left for the day. It varies. My meal doesn’t but the number does.

But later when I log lunch, I’ve got more. So I guess it goes up with activity? I use a watch to track activity, but it’s not like I exercised between breakfast and lunch. Just work, which is not sedentary but it’s not a work out either. It’s been kind of frustrating, but livable as I’ve said the primary purpose of me using this app was to make sure I’m getting what I need from the food I eat. And normally I work out in the afternoon, so I’ll be a tiny bit over at the end of the day, but by like 100 or less, which feels right for the food I eat.But yesterday, I didn’t work out and this has been such a weird, yet not super inconvenient mystery, that I was legitimately curious what the number would end up being on just a standard day without any additional exercise.872 is the limit, counting an additional 92 calories of expenditure above baseline and 97 TEF. Anything else and it says over, with an exclamation mark. So what’s the energy target if it’s not your daily calories, because there’s no way an app that’s all about measuring nutrient needs thinks that’s healthy much less a “goal”.

So did I set something up wrong or does that number mean something else entirely.

and as a note to the app developers, for the love of litigation, whatever mistake I made or assumption I made, please make it less makable before some 16 year old teenage girl with body image issues gets a hold of this app and thinks she’s legitimately being told to eat… what is that, 683 calories a day?!

Does anyone else find they have a very small margin for error when it comes to tracking calories? I currently have my goal set to losing .75 pound per week. Slow and steady. However, when following the recommended calorie intake, I'm actually losing 1.5 lbs per week, double my goal. I may not be hungry after following the calorie count, but I'm not satisfied either. I also end up dragging through any exercise or physical activity the next day. This results in my desire for a feature I'd like to see.

I would like to see a feature to carry over calories to the next day. For example, if I estimate that my activity for the next day will burn 500 calories, I'd like to eat those extra 500 calories the day before. Not after. The math is easy enough, but I'd like to see the visual.

Am I supposed to shoot to hit the goal with as little a deficit as possible because the deficit I need is factored in? Or if I don't have a deficit does that mean that I'm not losing weight? (I'm trying to lose weight and gain muscle so I need to be sure I'm eating enough while also having a deficit of calories for the day)

I have focused on eating nutritionally rich food and have been trying to balance my nutrients as laid out in cronometer, and meet nutritional goals. I have not been focusing on calories. I have been very successful in losing weight with this formula. I use a withing scale and have noted today that my fat is increasing as my weight is decreasing. So what should I be paying attention to nutritionally? I do not care about losing any more weight but do care about gaining fat.

Any advice would be appreciated. Cedar

Need some help. Chronometer spits out my maintenance calories at about 2500ish. but when I cut 500 for a 6 wk period I lost 16lbs (actually I lost 21 but I took 4lbs off as water). that's a 1700ish calorie difference. I enter a custom BMR but then the maintenance estimator doesn't adjust with my change in weight. can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Focusing on Calorie Density as Effective Way to Lose Weight

I have seen a growing focus on structuring ones diet so that the overall calorie density (calories per pound) is around a specific value rather than trying to limit portion size as a way to, as advocates of this way say, "lose weight without losing your mind" (1). This is based on large amounts of research showing that the primary signal of satiety is simply the mass of food consumed with other factors such as macronutrient ratios and total calories as a secondary signal (2). So the calorie density approach is to select foods such that average calorie density of ones entire diet is such that you will have eaten a weight/volume of food to feel pleasantly full while at the same time there is a sufficient calorie deficit in order to gradually lose weight. And then once down to ideal weight to slightly increase the average calorie density in order to avoid regaining the lost weight.

For most people eating between 3 and 5 pounds of food a day (usually depends on body size) is fully satiating. And the calorie needs of the average person run between 1500 and 2500 calories (again usually depending on body size) to maintain weight. Simple math says that a diet with an average calorie density of around 500 calories per pound will simultaneously hit both total calories and total food weight values. To lose weight instead of eating less of the same mix of foods that average to 500 calories per pounds, the necessary calorie deficit is achieved by shifting the amounts of foods such that more of the very low calorie foods like vegetables, leafy greens and most fruit and less of the high calorie density foods like bread and any added oils or sugars so that the calorie density average out to around 400-450 calories per pound that yields a 150-500 calorie deficit.

My question is has anybody tried focusing on calorie density as a way to lose weight, and did you have success? And a second question did you find a way to use Cronometer to help you determine the overall calorie density of a given meal and for a given day?

I know that all the necessary information (weight of food consumed and calories in that food) is readily available in cronometer, but I have not found a way to get Cronometer to do the calorie density calculation for me. If need be, I'll just transfer the necessary information to Excel and do the single division step there, but I would rather not have to do this manual step. I would much rather have it done by Cronometer and then be able to generate a report and/or plot of calorie density of my diet over time.

Thanks!
