Reasons why I chose MyFitnessPal over Cronometer

There's a lot to be said for Cronometer, it does some things better than MFP but these three features missing caused me to go with MFP (premium, if I'd gone with Cronometer I'd be premium too):

Inability to add measures in mL instead of grams to custom foods

Inability to add custom exercises with a specified duration and calories burned (MFP does this well despite it's shortcomings)

Inability to set group (breakfast, lunch, dinner) goals, I assume this is the case as you don't offer a free trial period and I'm not paying for a trial when lack of the previous two features mean I'm going with MFP (coming from loseit! which I have an annual subscription for that will now go unused).

If you plan on adding these I might go with Cronometer but I found a post on the forum where you said adding mL measures was a great feature in 2017 and still haven't added it so...

I want to use Cronometer, it does several things well. But I miss these features too much...

  • Hi @RobPitt

You can use mL as a serving size in custom foods by entering it manually. We use grams as a default in order to accurately compare foods. If you know the mL value, I would recommend entering it as your serving size but also adding the corresponding gram amount after weighing it. This way you can accurately compare items and even use it as an ingredient in custom recipes

You can add a custom exercise in the web version of Cronometer. We are currently working on an update for the exercise feature, so hopefully this will also improve the function.

We do have diary groups! Gold users have access to the diary group feature. You can't set specific targets for each dairy group but you can see a nutrition summary in the diary group.

If you want to try it out, you could sign up for a month and cancel your subscription to ensure you are not auto-renewed!

I deleted this post as I misread your reply. Unfortunately the forum won't let me delete images.

  • After deleting the above I went and tried it and want to ask again, how do I use mL as a serving size? I tried to use mL but it just thinks it's 100 grams. If you look up say Good Hemp, Creamy Seed Milk in your database it is listed in mL but I can't for the life of me work out how to make my custom foods behave the same. Can you show me with a couple of screenshots?

One more thing, you say you support groups but do you support per group calorie goals? So say a goal of 500 calories for dinner and 400 for breakfast?

    Thanks for your time.

  • Oh I get it, you just leave grams blank. Not very tidy as you have to enter all quantities as fractions of 100 mL instead of in mL but serviceable.

  • Gold users have access to the diary group feature. You can't set specific targets for each dairy group but you can see a nutrition summary in the diary group. You can learn more about the diary groups in our user manual:

  • I use the diary groups and label breakfast, lunch dinner and snack with a goal range for calories. Works great. Can't help you on the ml thing.

I've been using cronometer since 2014, and maintained my goal weight this past year after dropping 70 lbs. Following CRON has changed my life, and I can look back and have a record of how I used to eat, how much I weighed and activity levels by season.

Thanks to whoever put this all together. I never could keep a good journal . The ease of the app and instant feedback, and wealth of information keeps me healthy, light and fit.

    You changed my life.

  • That's a good idea using the labels for goals!
