Does the goal deficit number mean I should of eaten 499 calories less today?
If so, what is the Remaining number for?

Your remaining number at the bottom, in bold, means you had 979 calories left to consume in order to reach your total calorie goal for that day.
The Goal Deficit is there only if you're trying to lose weight or consume less calories than you burn. Someone else here can explain it better.
