Android: Cannot "Paste" when it's the first entry for the day
Android: If I want copy an item from a previous day and paste it into the current day, there is no way to paste if there isn't something else there. The first item requires manual entry. A workaround is to fill it in with anything, then paste, then delete that item, but this should be fixed.

If this is the Android phone app, the "Paste" option in the vertical ellipses menu is working on mine with or without diary groups.
If this is the web app and you don't have diary groups, you would not be able to right click to paste unless you have some other entries, but you should still be able to use the "Paste" option from the gear icon dropdown near the top right.
