Brown Rice Nutrition

Hi I am confused between the Brown Rice and white rice nutrition facts. For the same amount of volume it appears brown rise is much more caloric than white rice? Is this valid? Wouldn’t the extra fibre absorb more water making it expand more and if anything be less calorie dense.

  • Hi Joseph,

This is a good example that demonstrates the differences between measuring a food in volume (cups) compared with measuring by weight!

The brown rice does have a bit more water per gram than white rice which on a weight-to-weight comparison gives brown rice fewer calories:

It looks like brown rice is quite a bit more dense than white rice:
    NCCDB gives the following weights:
    1 cup of brown rice = 202g
    1 cup of white rice = 158g
