Are the daily nutrient intake recommendations based on a 2,000 kcal diet, or are they adjusted to my kcal target? In other words, if I'm not meeting some of my nutrient targets and am eating a lower calories diet, is it possible that I'm getting sufficient nutrients due to a lower overall calorie needs?

  • The default nutrient targets are based on the recommendations for your age, sex, weight, height and life stage, if applicable. They are not based on a 2000 kcal diet. These targets are designed for the general healthy population eating a mixed diet and are set to meet the needs of most people in each category.

Each of us will have different needs, though we don't have that level of detail to know what our specific requirements are. So the nutrient targets have built in a margin of error to aim to be enough to meet the needs of most people.
