Fitbit sync with BMR included

Somebody please explain this to me like I'm an idiot, I know that the FitBit adds in calories burned for your BMR as well as what it actually records, in the cronometer help section it says it'll put calories burned as it's above your BMR, I guess I don't understand how it's able to do this. I may burn 500 calories, but the fitbit will show say 950 because it's adding in my BMR, doesn't that make it impossible for cronometer to adjust seeing as how those weren't actively burned by me? I suck at math sorry if this is simple I'm assuming it's figured out very well I just don't get it seems to me like it's giving me extra credit I didn't earn at the end of the day.
