Exercise Calories

edited April 2019 in General Discussion

Is there an option you can choose if you don’t want to consume the calories you burned during exercise?

Read through the the thread didn’t see anything that would answer my question, I have my cronometer set for weight loss and yes I know that it gives me a calorie deficit in order to lose weight and if you add a workout then it increases you calorie intake so I think I get what your saying which is that even if you eat those calories that you burned you are will still be in a calorie deficit as long as you have set your goal for weight loss, but even with that deficit already calculated for me I still prefer not to eat those calories burned through working out, so all I really want to know is if there is an option in the settings that lets you choose if you want or don’t want to consume calories burned, that specific answer I did not see in the the thread so I’m not sure. P.S I added the screen shot of start of the thread accidentally and could not delete after sorry.

Your calorie goal changes based on what you eat during the day (the amount of calories you can consume during the day gets smaller, the more food you enter in it)

So, if we treat entries for calories burned in the same way, the more exercise we add into the diary, the amount of calories you can still consume for the day should get larger!

If you have set a weight loss goal, this will account for a smaller target. Exercise requires fuel, (just like when putting gas in your car), so you can think of it as the amount needed to maintain yourself throughout the day. In the same way, your BMR value (the amount of energy needed to maintain basic bodily function) and general activity level (amount of energy needed for basic movement throughout the day) also contribute to the calculation of your total energy needs.

Let me know if this doesn't make sense; or perhaps I am missing something? @Susan_RD_101 might be able to weigh in on this one as well!

Sorry that wasn’t my question maybe I explained it wrong, I was asking if there is an option in the settings that’s lets you choose if you either want or do not want to consume the calories you burned through working out. I know that your calories go up when you log workouts and and I do understand the explanation above but it just didn’t answer my question.

Here is a snap chat for you to see what it is I’m asking, if you look below track calories you will see Deduct Calories When I Exercise it gives you the choice of either turning it off means you wish to consume calories you burn for workouts, turning it on means you do not wish to consume calories burned through workouts. Do you have something like this in the settings that I may be missing, thats all I really want to know. I think the snap shot will explain what I mean better then how I explained it lol.

  • My apologies for the misunderstanding; We do not currently offer an option to remove the effect of calories burned on the energy target.

For weight loss clients, I often don't encourage syncing activity calories because 1) it's often over-estimated and 2) it teaches people to eat in response to activity (we do need fuel for workouts but we often overeat calories from exercise).

  • That then defeats the purpose for people who like to track their workouts like most people do with a tracking app. I need to track when I workout and what type of work I did and how many calories I burned, encouraging someone not to sync their activities makes no sense when there can just be a feature to not count calories towards your goal.

I hear you where you are coming from. :) For people, who like to track their workouts, I always just let them know that we can't necessarily account for variations in BMR that result from weight changes so just take the info with a grain of salt. ;)

  • got it thank you, that’s why it you be cool to have an option if weather or not we want consume or not consume workout calories I posted a pic a little while ago of what I was meaning it’s a feature I thought would be nice to have.

  • You can log the calories burned from your exercise as 1, therefore you will have a record of it in your logs but it won’t give you extra calories to eat.

  • why would I log my calories burned from exercise as 1 when that would not be accurate and does not reflect the true amount of calories burned? I want to keep track of true numbers so when I look back I know what I did rather then fudge the number in order for cronometer not the give me extra calories to eat when it can be solved my giving is the option I mentioned above.

    Lizzy

  • It’s called a work around. It’s an option for you if you don’t want to be credited those calories burned to your total number to be eaten.

  • It would make a lot more sense if there was just an option that could be turned off. This is pretty annoying for those of us who have our macros calculated.

  • I'd really like an option to set a percentage of exercise energy burned to add to the energy consumption budget. On days that I do a lot of exercise, I'm happy eating a little more, but I don't want to replace ALL the energy used.

  • Reupping this thread, because the functionality needs added to include exercise, but not include the calories due to metabolic adaptations while losing weight (should be just a simple toggle).

Other apps like MyFitnessPal etc include this as an option.

    Thanks

  • i’ve made the switch to MyNetDiary and it’s an amazing app, for me its much better then Cronometer right now give a try they have a 7 day trial, I stuck with Cronometer as long as I could but they lack so many features all other apps have, they still don’t even have a widget.

  • Hi; just wanted to update this thread; we are currently in the Public Beta phase of implementing support for excluding exercise from contributing to your dynamic goals. If you are interested in checking it out on the mobile Cronometer app, you can sign up to be a beta tester here: https://cronometer.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360040600332-How-Do-I-become-a-Beta-Tester-
