Daily Activity (Garmin) Resets after a Garmin Activity is Recorded

I noticed this weekend that after a walking activity was completed and synced to Cronometer, that my entry for Daily Activity (Garmin) calories reset to 0. My walking activity though was logged correctly. Is this normal? Here is my current device and Cronometer settings. Garmin Forerunner 945.
Chronometer
BRM = Custom. I am using the resting calories from the 945 and changing when weight is updated.
Activity Level - None

  • Hi @Damon would you mind please contacting support@cronometer.com with screenshots of both your Cronometer and Garmin Diaries indicating the discrepancies? Thanks!

  • I am also having this issue, I'm not sure how to get basic activity level into cronometer from Garmin like I have gotten from fitbit. I'm trying to switch.

Having the exact same issue here; nine times out of ten, completing a walking activity will correctly log it in Cronometer while simultaneously resetting daily activity calories to zero. As a workaround, I'm forced to memorize what the value was before beginning the activity and then log it manually.

  • @moltisanti

If you could sent us some screenshots of your calories burned in Garmin (activity, total and/or from your walking activity) compared with the same day in Cronometer that would be a big help! Send them along to support@cronometer.com

  • Note that Garmin has had a major server outage (starting July 22 or July 23, 2020), apparently due to a ransomware type attack. That may be affecting tracking recent Garmin data in cronometer.

  • Sports activities from Garmin are coming through again, but it appears that standard daily activity is still not.

  • Agree with Damon above - Daily Activity is not syncing like it used to. Excercises are syncing correctly.

  • We are looking into this issue now that Garmin is back up and running.

    Thanks for reporting this!

  • I am also seeing this behavior. If I can do anything to help test on my end, I am happy to help!

  • Good idea @hobothulhu !
I'm also willing to help test if wanted/needed.

  • Hi there, do you have any update about standard daily activity? I have no issues with exercises :)

    thanks :)

  • I can happily report that both daily activity and heartrate are coming through currently for me.

  • Daily activity and excercise each appear to be working and accurate for me now. Thanks!

  • I am seeing daily activity as well! Thank you.

  • Looks like Garmin is still recovering from their emergency - according to their status page, third party syncing (that's us!) still hasn't fully recovered. New activity should be syncing, but activity logged prior to now still may be experiencing issues. You can monitor the status here: https://connect.garmin.com/status/

  • @Hilary Are there any plans to avoid double-counting activity calories when the sync goes back and fills in the outage period? I manually input some activity calories for those days and if the sync fills in a Daily Activity then I would need to go back and erase my manual entries. Maybe at least an email to users to double-check those days once Garmin says everything looks normal (?).

  • @Hilary Hopefully Garmin will be fully recovered soon. Today the daily activity is not appearing again.

  • Hi i just noticed this problem since Monday, 4/jan/2021 =(

  • edited January 2021

Yes, I still find Daily Activity sync is hit or miss. If I remember to force my Garmin watch to sync with Garmin Connect on the phone before my first exercise activity of the day, then it seems more likely that Daily Activity will show up in Cronometer - and will be updated after additional non-exercise watch <->phone syncing.

But I'll admit this could just be superstitious learning.

  • i never had this problem before - today specifically i had daily activity within cronometer already, until i went for a an activity walk. Then it zeroed. Very strange.

  • Noticed this issue for the first time today. Post walking-activity being logged, the daily activity is at 0 calories though it does show 166 minutes noted

  • I have the same issue! Hopefully it will be fixed soon

  • Hey!when will it be fixed?

  • This need to be fixed. It gets pointless to track calories if I don't get an accurate number for daily activity.

Every time there is a garmin activity that is downloaded, the daily activity counter resets to 0 and stays there for the rest of the day. I then need to estimate how much calories I've burned throughout the day with a generic number.

Where do cronometer gets this daily activity information on the garmin side? Steps? Heart rate?

  • Hi @Karen_Cronometer, I noticed that the daily activity disappeared and I have only the activity uploaded from Garmin. How can I have the daily activity back? It is essential to track those calories too. Thank you.

  • @Karen_Cronometer I will thank you. Would still like my question answer here as it would benefits other as well. Where do cronometer gets the daily activity calorie numbers? Is it like the caramilk? A secret?

  • @Martafaccioli we've got some trouble-shooting steps you can try here (if you haven't already):
Otherwise, I would recommend emailing us at support@cronometer.com so we can look into your individual account. It's helpful if we can get some screenshots of your Garmin Connect calories so we can compare to what Cronometer is importing into your account. It's a big help to see it visually :)

@rohlicycle It's not a secret if you can access the code and read api documentation! I'll ask for those answers for you!

  • @Karen_Cronometer thank you. I'm in touch with support@cronometer.com to solve the issue. Here the instructions received:
You can back-fill your Garmin historic data by following these steps:
    Login to the website https://cronometer.com
    Go to the Settings tab
    Go to the Devices sub-tab
Click on Update in the Garmin section to choose which date you want to sync your Garmin data.
But nothing changed. My Daily Activity (not the activity uploaded after a workout - daily steps I think) is not there.
