For whole/natural foods, please stop allowing brand name entries

For those natural minimally-processed foods like bags of whole navel oranges, wheat germ, spices or sugar that are sold under different brand names, I wish that Cronometer wouldn't allow all the different brand names which I've noticed have inaccurate or largely incomplete nutrition labels and instead just have entries using more complete USDA or similar data.

It's pretty irritating that none of the Cronometer brand name entries for navel oranges seem to include folate, which is a gross inaccuracy as oranges are high in folate. Cronometer should only allow "Navel Oranges" and not allow the interface to be cluttered up with the other options to have to sort through and choose from. Furthermore there are 2 almost duplicate plain "Navel Orange" entries to choose from, and both of these are grossly incomplete compared to what the USDA lists at https://fdc.nal.usda.gov/fdc-app.html#/food-details/746771/nutrients

I see that in the web interface an alert will come up if you look carefully at the bottom saying "Want better data? We found a similar food with 77 Listed Nutrients:
Orange, Fresh" but this doesn't come up in the Android app interface at all.

  • Hi veggietummy,

You can narrow down your search results to ONLY include foods from high quality sources. You may still see some brand name foods in the search results, but these have been analyzed and have more complete nutrient profiles; they are not based on the nutrition information shown on the nutrition label of the package.

In the mobile app, tap the orange +, then Add Food.
Tap on the orange filter menu to the right of the search box.
Check out the Filters section and select the Common filter.
This will only search our high quality databases, so your results won't be cluttered.

    I hope that helps!

  • It would be really helpful if:

when I search for Navel oranges, the list of results shows the number of listed nutrients for each entry from the list view (without having to go into each item to see the number of nutrients).

  • Thanks for your feedback!

Use the data source column as a guide. NCCDB and other lab analyzed sources will typically have many more nutrients listed than a source with the barcode symbol.
