confused by calorie display

Just starting out using this app and am so confused by the calorie display. One grey bar says I have 1967 calories/day (with 71 protein/210 carbs and 65 fat) but the graph says I can only consume 1793 calories for my weight loss goal and I haven’t entered any food yet??? So where does the 1967 come from and which number do I follow??

  • Welcome to Cronometer!

There are a few resources that might be helpful as you figure out the app. These include the user manual:

    and Cronometer University:

The following two videos will help to answer your question:

In a nutshell, the round summary on the left shows total calorie intake, and the round summary on the right shows total calories burned. The grey bar shows whether calorie intake vs. calorie burn was in balance. If you haven't put in anything yet, the grey bar is telling you how many calories you need to keep you alive (your basal metabolic rate) + calories needed for daily living.

  • Thanks for the reply - it makes a little more sense. I guess I don’t like having several calorie goals displayed - I just want to know how much I can eat :)
I’ve entered in my own calorie/macro goals based on numbers I’ve been following for a while but it doesn’t update to the calorie summary so I just turned those features off and only look at the calorie breakdown bars. It’s working for me and I really like all the other features of the app! Thanks

  • I was confused about this at first as well. I believe the top two bars are just showing you status of calories in and calories out (burned) according to your BMR, activity level and exercise.

The second set of graphs just below are indicating your status against the goals for weight as measured by calorie consumption as well as the macros (protein, carbs and fats). If you indicate you want to lose weight by 1 pound per week it will show you how many calories you can consume each day to achieve the required caloric deficit and what your status is for consuming those calories. So it is a calorie consumption goal that will be less than your calories burned just above.

The first set is merely status and the second set is status against your profile goals. I'd suggest going in an playing with your weight loss goals in the profile and you'll see how it changes. Hope that helps.
