Imported Fitbit activity records very high calories

I recently started using Cronometer, and connected it to my Fitbit app. I've noticed the imported activity times are right, but the calorie burned counts are way off - in this case I went for a moderate walk. My activity level is already set for 'none.'

  • Hi Ralph,

How many calories are reported for your walk in your Fitbit account?
Do you have your weight recorded in your Fitbit account - does that match the weight you have in your Cronometer account?

  • I have the same issue, 1590 calories burned in my Fitbit app, 2162 calories in Cronometer. My weight & body fat % are the same in both and I have disconnected & reconnected the two apps.

  • Hi Hakuna,

One thing that might account for the difference is that Fitbit reports your calories burned so far today, while Cronometer gives you the total for the day to help you plan your meals for the day.

Also check your activity level settings in your Cronometer account. If you are using an activity tracker to import your calories burned throughout the day, we recommend setting your activity level to None to avoid double-counting these calories.

On the website, select the Settings tab, then Profile. Use the drop-down menu to select a new activity level.

Let me know if the calories are still quite off between the two.

  • Hi, so why does your app say calories burned if its supposed to be a target for the day? Also why does the figure in the calories burned circle on Cronometer change if its supposed to be a target for the day? Cronometer shows 1966 'calories burned' currently, yesterday when i posted it showed 2162.

  • Hi Hakuna,

Cronometer tries to present all the information you need to reach your goals:
-How many calories you have consumed
-How many calories you have burned
-How many calories are recommended for weight loss, maintenance, or gain
    -Your

The calories burned keeps track of how many calories you have burned for that particular day. This includes your basal metabolic rate (the number of calories your burn for basic body functioning), your chosen activity level setting and takes into account any exercises you have imported or manually logged to your diary.

You can compare this with your calories consumed to quickly see what you need to balance your energy in with energy out. You could think of this as your target, if your aim is to balance your energy each day (i.e. maintain weight).

The budget will show your target, based on your chosen settings; this will show your calories burned - calories consumed and will also take into account your weight gain or loss goal, if you have chosen one in your weight goal settings.

  • Thanks for the info. Can you advise if Cronometer imports calories burned from Fitbit? It looks like it doesn't and you have to manually add calories burned in Cronometer by adding activity.

  • Hi,

To answer: "How many calories are reported for your walk in your Fitbit account?
Do you have your weight recorded in your Fitbit account - does that match the weight you have in your Cronometer account?"

Calories were about double from what Fitbit showed as activity (700 vs 300 for the activity.) Weights were the same.

    Hi Ralph,

Fitbit can import general activity, including calories burned from movement throughout the day. Is the 700 kcal called Activity in your Cronometer diary?
It can also import activity from specific exercises that you have done in a day separately and may name them according to the activity, such as biking or swimming.

Would you mind sending us some screenshots to support@cronometer.com and we can look into this some more? We would like to get this working properly for you!

    Cheers,
