How do you eat brazil nuts ?

It seems that brazil nuts have high level of selenium. Just ONE brazil nut has 165% RDA ! To me... looks like a joke. How can I eat just one nut ? And they say that 4 nuts a month lower cholesterol.
So... it's ok to eat one brazil nut a day ? How much do you eat ?

i got a bag, i eat just one. only on days i need it though...usually i get enough selenium from the sunflower seeds in my granola...

  • One nut a day is like taking a pill of selenium supplement.
You can not even enjoy the taste... :#

It's fine to be above the RDA, but just stay below the UL. I typically advise eating only one Brazil nut per day but you can have up to 4 and be safely (for the most part) under the UL. However, if you eat a lot of other nuts and seeds in your day, you are better just sticking with one.

  • Here they say that 4 brazil nuts per month will lower cholesterol. Do you think it's true ?
And some people say in the comments that they eat 1 brazil nut per week. I find it too little. I'd like to eat at least one every other day.

I tend to be skeptical of claims where one food results in lowered cholesterol; the portfolio diet is interesting since each food component is believed to lower LDL by 5-10% but in a free-living situation, it tends to be a bit less.

Personally, I would look at your average selenium intake over a week to see how many Brazil nuts you can safely add to your diet. Most people are fine with adding a few per day.

  • 'UL' = upper limit?

    Pillage, then burn.

  • Yes.
