What does setting my profile to "pregnant" actually do?

edited March 2018 in Ask An Expert

Hi! I am new here in the forum, tried searching for the similar topic but didn't find anything so if there is a topic that I didn't notice, I will delete this one
I am interested in the profile setting "pregnant" - what does it do besides adding additional calories?
First, does it also increase the requirements for certain vitamins, minerals and omegas? (this I can check, actually, but if anyone knows - you'll save me time  )
Another question is about the weight goal. What setting should I put there?! Should I simply choose "maintain" and trust the automatically added calories, or should I choose "gain"?
Thanks!

Hi @Hilary , I have already read this post I don't know how many times  it's been my "forever open" tab for few days since it's really useful
However, it still does not answer my questions :(

I checked yesterday the nutrient amounts required for "pregnant" and "normal" setting, things did differ, calcium did not change (which got me confused at first, but the blog post mentioned above explained why), omega 3's changed etc.
So I managed to answer my own question through experimenting.

But I didn't manage to find an answer for the weight goal setting. When I set to pregnant cronometer automatically adds 350 calories to the day (but what if I'm on the the first (0 additional calories) or the third (450 additional calories) trimester, should I add or subtract the calories manually then, by adding exercise or food? That's one question :)
The second one is what weight goal should I choose when the setting is on pregnant. Maintaining? Weight gain a pound a week? Or maybe cronometer pays no attention to weight goals whatsoever once one sets his settings to pregnant?

    Please shed some light((:

    Hello Oksimora,

We are in the process of updating the calorie settings during pregnancy to account for which trimester you are in. Currently, we only have one pregnancy setting which adds additional calories, as well as updates the nutrient targets based on the RDAs for pregnancy.

With the additional calories already accounted for, you should not set your weight goal to gain weight - this would add even more to your calorie target.

    Best,

    @Oksimora

I wrote the article that is referred to above, so I'm happy to answer any questions you may have. :)

In general, pregnancy is not the time to be losing weight, as it could compromise nutrient delivery to the growing baby. However, if someone is overweight or obese, the amount of extra food (and subsequent weight gain) will be reduced.

If your BMI is > 30 kg/msq, I would speak with your doctor about a referral to an RD, as they can work with you to help ensure you are eating a balanced diet and gaining the proper amount of weight.

Until the updated weight targets are released by Cronometer, I would just set your calorie targets manually and keep your weight goal at "maintaining".

    Kind regards,

@Karen_Cronometer, great! can't wait to see calorie updates according to the semester, would be nice if you added the twin option as well, I think some women might find that helpful too:)
Thank you, @Susan_RD_101 , I thought so too, that maintaining might be the wisest option:)

@Susan_RD_101 @Karen_Cronometer Hi! I'm also interested in the trimester options and wanted to ask when is the estimated date that Cronometer would provide them? Thank you.

Hey so I'm sorry to revive an old thread, but where is this "Pregnancy" option?? I'm looking for it in my profile and can't find anything about it!

I'm still in very, very early pregnancy, and would like to get my nutrition right!

    Thanks!
