Has anyone ever achieved a 1:1 ratio for Omega 6 and 3? How?

I've tried for months and no success. Your secrets please?

  • i got it to 1:2-1:3, with my granola made with a lot of flax and sunflower seeds, but i honestly didn't feel that good (probably a mental thing, not physical) so now i just shoot for a 1:4, maybe 1:3...i've been saving up for a EPA/DHA, omega-6 blood test it's only $140 at the local lab...see how i'm doing with my 1:4 flax/sunflower regime....if i get it done in the next couple months i'll let you know my experience...

  • I do, sometimes. Eat fish (which I love so I'm more than happy to) and limit seed oils. On the days I have a "bad ratio" it's usually because I've eaten whole nuts, and I don't get too worked up about that.

do you really need to even try to get a 1:1 getting your omega-3's from fish? as far as i know the RDA and the reason it's so high is poor conversion of ALA to DHA/EPA...and fish have the DHA/EPA already converted for you don't they? they did all the work and you don't have to try so hard, i guess...

being that you get a 1:1 with fish, and omega-6's are a essential fat also, that competes for digestion, and mostly come from plants...Can you get directlab testing done in aus? i'd be curious to compare results...

edit: and being that WHO recommends 12g's a day omega-6 for women, you must REALLY like fish!

  • instead of a edit, i thought i'd make a new post you can get directlabs done in the land down under, (yes i will probably end up watching the video from men down under later tonight), but here's a link for an omega 3 test, not sure if it covers 6's too like the one i can get, but it's about the same price...

and , hell as i end this, i'm tuning too youtube to watch a 80's pop song...lol

  • Most days my ratio is about 1:6. Average for the last 7 days is about 1:5 I dunno whether I'm worried about it or not ;)

  • We haven't seen any clear benefit of achieving a ratio of 1:1. Most of the research focuses on achieving minimum values for EPA/DHA and omega 6 fats, while reducing the overall ratio between the two.

In case you haven't seen the blog I wrote on Omega 3:6, you may want to take a quick peek:

  • Thanks for the link, Susan. I see that the Admin says the nutrient meter for Omega 6 to 3 was set at 1:1. Was there a particular reason for that?

  • @Lin

Hmmm... I'm not sure. But the way it is set up now is to show a 4:1 ratio "in the green". As long as you are within that range most days, I think you are doing a great job. :)
